Our Team

Our experienced team welcomes and supports each child’s ideas, experiences and understandings in a learning environment which values play. We work together with each child and their family unit to encourage a child’s disposition to learn and create.

We are fortunate to have highly qualified and experienced team. All team members hold current first aid certificates and participate in various professional development activities such as workshops and conferences.

Sharon Kemp

Sharon is a passionate early childhood teacher with extensive international training in Reggio inspired learning environments, Danish and UK forest schools. She has over 20 years experience in Early Childhood (16 years with C&K) and over 10 years as a qualified teacher. Since joining Banks Street Kindy, she has also been juggling a Masters in Education, which she is close to completing, and has started working with ACU as a tertiary placement supervisor.

Sharon has the ability to facilitate an inclusive, calm and vibrant learning space for children and families. Her teaching practice has strong connections to building a sense of community and nature education. Sharon believes family and friends are a strong foundation in maintaining a healthy work life balance. In her spare time, Sharon enjoys gardening, crochet, art and volunteering.

Kim Crisp

Kim Crisp

Kim joined Banks St Kindy at the start of 2018. She has over 25 years of working in early childhood programs. Prior to joining Banks Street Kindy, Kim taught in kindergartens, schools and long day centres.   Kim’s teaching practice has a strong focus on the interconnectedness between social skill development and children’s cognition and learning.  The concepts of kindness and respect are explored throughout the year in the kindergarten program.

When she is not at Kindy, Kim works as a research assistant in the School of Early Childhood at QUT.  She is currently part of a research project that is exploring exemplary practices in early childhood education.

Melissa Calkin

Melissa joined our Kindy in 2018 and is now the Assistant Educator for both the Bees and the Butterflies Groups.

Melissa has over 20 years experience working in a variety of Early Childhood settings and since 2010 has worked in a variety of roles in Kindergartens.

“It’s great to join the team at Banks Street Kindy.  I have many years experience working in early childhood settings in a range of roles and I am also a mother of two children – Grace and Louis. I love taking time just to visit a creek, sit in nature or go bushwalking. I look forward to getting to know all of the children and their parents/carers throughout the year.” – Melissa Calkin

Natasha Powell

Assistant Educator for the Bees group

Bachelor of Education (Early Childhood First Class Honours) and Bachelor of Arts (Applied Ethics, Distinction)

Natasha is an experienced early childhood teacher with a passion for inclusion and early childhood education. Over the past 20 years, she has worked in a range of early childhood settings, including community kindergartens, long day care and primary schools for Education Queensland – from the Preschool Teacher in Charge at Doomadgee State School to the Special Education Unit in Chinchilla State Primary School and Craigslea State School.

Banks St Kindy’s philosophy and values align closely to Natasha’s, where community and relationships are the foundations of developing a strong sense of belonging and confidence. She is a positive and committed educator who connects well to both adults and children, and her education centres on her belief that all children are competent and capable individuals. Natasha has two children transitioning from primary school to high school.

Dena has many years of experience working in various positions in the early childhood sector. She is extremely passionate about working within the early years, supporting young children to develop and maintain strong concepts about themselves as capable and successful life-long learners.

B. Fine Arts, EN and Blue Card 

Our multi-talented Kath holds a Bachelor of Fine Art majoring in Illustration QCA 2000, as well as having a background in nursing and childcare. Kath began working at Banks Street Kindy 2007 facilitating group artworks for the Annual Art Show. She is an incredible Artist and communicates so well with the children, enlightening them to the wonders that surround us, and teaching them how to describe their ideas verbally and through art.

Elizabeth Oliver

Administrative Assistant,  Tuesday and Friday mornings, 8.30am, – 1.00pm


B. Business, MA Professional Accounting, Blue Card

Elizabeth is our exceptionally qualified Admin Assistant and go-to girl for almost any question. She is inspired by everyone she comes into contact with an enjoys a chat.

Elizabeth started at Banks Street Kindy in 2010 and holds a Bachelor of Business, majoring in Hospitality Management, and a Masters of Professional Accounting.

Elizabeth brightens every room she is in and is an all round good chook, and an incredible asset to the Kindy.
